About me:
I am a proud graduate of some of the most prestigious and sought after training programs in the country. These including the Interlochen Arts Academy where I was given the voice award, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the Tanglewood Music Center where I studied with Opera legends such as Renee Flemming, Dawn Upshaw and Stephanie Blythe, Stony Brook University, and Des Moines Metro Opera where I trained as an apprentice artist. In 2012 I was recognized as a national winner in the classical voice division of YoungArts and was later named a presidential in the arts semi-finalist. I currently enjoy an active relationship with YoungArts as the Discipline Coordinator for the Voice Department.
As a soloist I have appeared with the Center for Contemporary Opera where I was a featured soloist in Niloufar Nourkabsh’s new opera “We The Innumerable”, a production which was featured on PBS’ “All Arts” program”, Des Moines Metro Opera whose televised performance of “Ruslka” was nominated for an Emmy, Tanglewood Music Center, Opera Philadelphia, Finger Lakes Opera, Emmanuel Music, Opera NEO, Music at Co-Cath, City Lyric Opera and many more.
As an active ensemble performer I currently am on the New York Philharmonic Chorus roster and have performed with musical icons such as Alicia Keys, Bernadette Peters, Jaap van Sweden and Vanessa Williams to name just a few. I also frequently perform as an ensemble member with Opera Philadelphia, St. Thomas on 5th Ave. and I am a section leader and cantor at Church of the Blessed Sacrament.
I began my musical training at the age of 7 as a member of the Philadelphia Boys Choir and have been singing ever since (over 20 years now!) As a teacher I have taught students as young as 7 years old as head of the Bronx School for Music vocal department, and also have taught at the University level as director of the Undergraduate Vocal Department at Stony Brook University. This range of experience as both a performer and teacher gives me a unique perspective for students of all ages and levels of experience!
For younger students:
I believe that creating high level musicianship in young students is not only feasible for some, it is possible for all. Younger students are sponges, and the more concrete and specific you can make these skills, the better prepared a student will be when they begin to approach more advanced repertoire as a singer or instrumentalist. My basic pedagogical approach for younger students who may not be ready for full vocal technical work is based in solfege (Do, Re, Mi etc.). My goal is to give students the skills to sing a variety of scales with no help from the piano, keeping the pitch and key in their mind. As we learn these scales we also apply these patterns to written music where I help them identify key signatures, and then pick repertoire where they can sing these patterns in context. These skills are not only important for singing, but will be the basis of all musical endeavors these students decide to pursue in the future.
For older students:
My work with students who are ready to begin or deepen their technical and artistic journey is based on the belief that each voice is different and operates under its own principles. Too often teachers advocate for a one size fits all approach to teaching voice. My approach is all individually based and is a collaborative effort between myself and the student. My students have enjoyed success from studying with me and have been accepted to programs such as the Peabody Institute of Music, Mannes, Special Music School and Carnegie Mellon. They have performed in the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, North Shore Music Theater, Theater by the Sea, and have appeared on HBO programs in addition to many other professional theatrical appearances.
For members of Church of the Blessed Sacrament:
If you are a member of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament or a neighboring parish I can offer the opportunity for you or your child to learn the mass setting and lead mass in front of the whole congregation with Organist and Music Director Jason Roberts. This is a wonderful and unique opportunity to perform in front of the entire community and to use our skills practically.
